This legislation introduced by Representatives Larry Bucshon (R-IN) and Don Davis (D-NC), aims to modernize the nation’s recycling infrastructure, spur innovation and reduce plastic waste.

“This legislation is a step in the right direction, and we applaud the leadership of Rep. Larry Bucshon and Rep. Don Davis for introducing a bill that recognizes the essential role plastic material plays in our daily lives and addresses comprehensive plastics recycling,” said PLASTICS President and CEO Matt Seaholm. “Modernizing the country’s recycling infrastructure and developing end markets for recycled material are critical to increasing recycling rates and ensuring that plastic waste stays in our economy and out of the environment. We look forward to working together with legislators in Washington to achieve our shared sustainability goals and ultimately get a bill to the President’s desk.”

PLASTICS Strongly Opposes White House Position Change On Plastic Production Caps https://www.textileworld.com/textile-world/2024/08/plastics-strongly-opposes-white-house-position-change-on-plastic-production-caps/ Thu, 15 Aug 2024 20:50:01 +0000 https://www.textileworld.com/?p=97748 WASHINGTON, D.C. — August 14, 2024 — The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) released the following statement on the White House’s decision to change its position and support limiting virgin plastics production as part of the UN Plastics Agreement currently being negotiated:

“The White House’s misguided reversal in support of plastic production caps is not only impractical but directly harmful to all U.S. manufacturers and will get us no closer to reaching our shared environmental goals,” said Matt Seaholm, President and CEO of PLASTICS.

“The plastic industry is the seventh largest manufacturing industry in the United States and employs one million people. With this decision, the White House has turned its back on Americans whose livelihoods depend on our industry, as well as on manufacturers in all sectors that rely on plastic materials.

“Plastic offers unparalleled safety, protection, and efficiency and can be reused and recycled, reducing our overall resource needs. An independent study confirms plastics have lower total greenhouse gas contribution than alternative materials. Yet, the White House’s decision ignores these facts in favor of misinformation spread by anti-plastic activists.

“Furthermore, this reversal has undermined U.S. negotiators’ influence in UN negotiations as other countries know this extreme position will not receive support in the U.S. Senate.

“We are dedicated to keeping plastic waste out of the environment and believe we need to work together to achieve this. However, the White House’s drastic position change will not accomplish this goal, only set us back.”

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) is the only organization that supports the entire plastics supply chain, including Equipment Suppliers, Material Suppliers, Processors, and Recyclers, representing over one million workers in our $548 billion U.S. industry.

Plastics Industry Association Launches Recycling Is Real Advocacy Campaign https://www.textileworld.com/textile-world/2023/09/plastics-industry-association-launches-recycling-is-real-advocacy-campaign/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 17:30:31 +0000 https://www.textileworld.com/?p=87557 WASHINGTON — September 14, 2023 — The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has launched a new advocacy campaign called “Recycling is Real”, dedicated to promoting and defending plastic recycling in America. The campaign will provide content to help elected officials and policymakers understand that recycling is a vital link of the sustainability and circularity chain, enabling them to make more well-informed decisions about recycling resources for their constituents.

The campaign has also been created in an effort to put an end to false narratives claiming that recycling doesn’t happen or is a “myth.” Anti-recycling organizations and their allies have created a coordinated campaign against plastic recycling in an effort to advance their anti-plastics agenda and it is eroding faith in our nation’s ability to recycle.

“Plastic recycling is very real, and it happens every single day across America,” said PLASTICS’ President and CEO Matt Seaholm. “The Recycling is Real campaign allows both the public and lawmakers to see for themselves the extraordinary role recycling plays in the circular economy, making it undeniable that recycling is not only effective but is a feasible and economical way to achieve our shared sustainability goals.”

PLASTICS, on behalf of the entire plastics industry supply chain, is committed to sustainability and ensuring plastic material remains in our circular economy, and out of the environment. Recycling is an integral part of achieving this goal, and the industry knows America needs to recycle more. Recently, recycling has come under attack from those who wish to reduce or eliminate the production of plastic altogether. Recycling is Real will show how recycling happens, where it happens and introduce the people who make it happen. This initial launch will spotlight recycling efforts taking place at Ultra-Poly, Placon, Novolex and MAAG, with additional videos launching in the coming weeks and months.
